From The iPhone 4G To Interplanetary Travel, Technology Moves At The Speed Of Light
In about 48 hours, I’m taking possession of my new HTC Desire smart phone. Although barely 3 months since the Desire’s UK release date, indications are that better more powerful smart phones from HTC and other brands are just around the corner.
At the time of the HTC Desire release it was dubbed by some as ‘the iPhone Killer’, yet within the last 48 hours, details of the new all-singing and dancing Apple iPhone 4G have been unveiled – the new kid in town…until next month anyway.
It’s hard to fathom exactly where we’ll be with technology in the next 5 to 10 years. As I’m writing this, many of the gizmos and gadgets found in everyday places like offices, hospitals and our homes would have been considered ’science fiction’ just 20 years ago.
Someone recently predicted that the days of the home PC, in its current format, are numbered. With the increased demand for the new technological features found in smart phones, tablet computers and cloud computing, that prediction just may hold a glimmer of truth.
Many of the things we take for granted today were once at the cutting edge of technology developed by the likes of NASA and the armed forces. There have even been reports that the technological gap between high end government agencies (like NASA and the military) and the high street is currently around 3 to 5 years. That really makes you wonder what’s in store, taking into account what is already available to the general public.
One thing is sure: With the speed of developments, and new technology seemingly becoming outdated by the time it hits the shops, I can’t help but wonder how soon it will be before we’re all playing 3D holographic chess games like in the original ‘Star Wars’ film, going on a holiday of a lifetime without leaving home (like ‘Total Recall’) or in the extreme, having our very consciousness and sense of being uploaded to some sort of storage device while a new body is being grown to replace our old.
Whatever comes in the future, we live in exciting and fast-paced times. Today we use technology to make life easier and quicker. The next leap forward could see real progress in saving and extending lives, as well as breaking the barriers of stellar travel and the exploration of new galaxies.
