O.k. Let me start off by saying that I bought this camera via 17th Street Photo’s actual store in the photography district on 17th street here in New York City. I called (on Sept. 10th 2008) before I went to the store and I spoke with a super friendly man named Doug who told me that they got the silver and black ones and that they had 50 each. So, I went down there and immediately bought one. They have a 7 days no questions asked return policy so I tried it out like a crazy man. Keep in mind that if you mention the fact that on EBAY they have the price listed at $475, they will honor it in the store even though they have it priced at $499. Anywho, the purchasing experience with them was excellent.

By the way, I’ve been waiting for Amazon to have this camera too. I pre-ordered both of them (black and silver), and never received an email saying that they were finally available to purchase. So, I took things into my own hands and found it myself (which is explained above).

So, onto the previous testing and my current camera:

Before purchasing the LX3, I bought the fx500 from Panasonic (from amazon.com) and the Fujifilm f100 (from B&H) in order to try those out. I wanted to try the fx500 because of the 25mm wide angle lens, 5x optical zoom, and to see what recording movies at 1280 x 720 at 30fps was like. And, I tried the f100 because I was told at B&H that the f100 was the best non-noisy camera to shoot indoor shots without flash (FYI the best movie option on the f100 was at 640 x 480 at 30fps so I had no desire in trying that). I’ll get to the results in a minute. Before those two, I was a Canon Powershot sd500 owner for more than 5 years and loved the camera, but I needed a new one for my honeymoon that is coming up on 10/12 for Hawaii.

Results of testing:

FX500: 25mm wide angle was awesome, 5x zoom was nice but focusing was a problem even after trying to focus 3 times (keep in mind my hands were steady as a rock so it wasn’t due to camera-shaking). the movie quality at 1280 x 720 at 30fps was a nice improvement from my powershot sd500’s 640 x 480 at 30fps, but in the end the actual quality and sound wasn’t as eye popping improvement. Picture quality was very noisy, no matter all of the tinkering that I tried.

F100: yes, the picture quality indoors without any flash with this camera was better and less noisy than the fx500, but I ultimately did not keep this camera because of the poor movie quality, wide angle only goes to 28mm, the LCD is small and it’s resolution is horrible.

So, sorry for the wait, but I thought I’d be as thorough as I possibly could about my review before the review.

LX3:

Keep in mind, I’d say that I’m an advanced beginner digital photographer. So, after owning the LX3 for almost a month, I simply have to say that I am SOOOOOOOO happy to have finally found the digital camera I’ve been looking for. I’ve read all of the digital camera websites out there, gone to the brick and morter stores to ask specialists directly, gone out and purchased digital cameras to test hands on, etc. etc. to finally come to the pleasure of owning the LX3.

What I was look for was a compact digital camera that had:

-Excellent wide angle: at 24mm, it’s the widest I’ve ever used, and I cannot go back to a camera even with 28mm ever again. the 24mm on this camera is SICK! it blows 28mm out of the park. I haven’t noticed any barrel distortion at 24mm. if wide angle is the main thing you are looking for in a compact digital camera, LX3 is where you will need to stop. and it doesn’t stop there. if you get the lens adapter and purchase the wide angle lens, you’ll be able to even go to 18mm!!!!. I haven’t gotten that yet. Oh, I definitely do no mind that this camera doesn’t have insane optical zoom options. I’m totally happy with the 24mm-60mm range. I found out that I personally didn’t even use the zoom options that much when I had the sd500 canon that it’s range was 35mm-115mm.
-Low f-stop: Finally the LX3 is the camera that steps up to the plate to offer an f-stop starting at 2.0. The slowest you’ll see on the other comparable camera companies are at like 2.8.
-Excellent indoor no flash quality: If you use the “iA” mode in a low light situation it will most likely automatically use ISO400 to take the picture and in the darker parts of the photo (like shadows, etc.) there will be noise, which is common anyway. But, if you use the “P” or “A” modes and change the “+/-” with the “Q.Menu” joystick, it will lighten up the photo and reduce the amount of noise. I found this out on my own, and I’ve been INSANELY pleased with the difference. So, all in all, in indoor low light situations, I now use either the “P” or “A” mode over the “iA” mode.
-1280 x 720 HD movie quality: The fx500 had 1280×720 HD quality at 30fps, while the LX3 has 1280×720 HD quality at 24fps. And honestly, the LX3 resolution LOOKS and SOUNDS much better to me than the fx500. Movie after movie that I take, they look and sound amazing. i LOVE the movie HD option on the LX3. My advise, I bought two 16gb extreme 3 sdhc cards from amazon and I’ll have no worries about recording speed and space issues.
-Easy to use manual controls: It took me no time to learn them. Easy breezy for a photographer at my level (again: advanced beginner)
-Easy to hold: I actually use the around the wrist cord that came with my powershot sd500 and that’s fine. The LX3 comes with a around the neck strap (which I don’t use). It does not come with an “around the wrist” cord. Maybe I’ll use the “around the neck” strap for days that I would go on hikes or something like that. This is NOT a pocket camera. More of a “around the wrist” camera.
-3.0inch 460k resolution LCD: Best LCD for a digital camera I’ve ever used, and it’s AWESOME. I’d rather have this than a 3.0inch 230k resolution touch screen LCD that the FX500 had.
-South of $500: Bought it at $475, no sales tax.

…and the LX3 met all of those requirements.

CONS: You do need a cap for the lens (it comes with one and a cord to attached it to the camera). Initially, I’d say that was the only semi-annoying thing, but I’ve already gotten used to it, and it’s no biggie at all. It’s a little tough taking vertical shots, but again … not a big problem at all.

Any questions let me know. I’ve easily taken north of 2000 shots already of all different types. Honestly, I’m insanely pleased with this camera. Oh, I read in another review about noise at iso400. If you really want to keep a shot taken in iso400 indoors without flash and there is still noise in it, there is an AMAZINGLY helpful plugin used in Adobe Photoshop that you can get called “Imageonic Professional Noiseware” that does an amazing job in totally removing it.

Hello everybody, My name is Daniel and I am about as serious as you can be and still be considered “amateur”. I have been taking photos on SLR’s since I was 10 years old on an old film Minolta and I bought my first DSLR (a Nikon D50) and since then I have owned everything from a base line Canon XSi all the way up to the the best camera I have ever handled… the D300s. I have operated the D3, D3s, D3x and the top of the line professional $10k Canons, and this is still my favorite ALL AROUND camera. So here is the break down to why I love this camera and I will give you a list of pros and cons. I love this camera for many reasons… [...]… not many people can justify spending another $4,000 (2-3 times the money) when they are looking to spend around $1,500- $2,000 for a good DSLR. So here is the benefits that I see to D300s over the other great Nikon models.

1. if you are into sports the D300s has a higher continuous frame rate than other models including the ever so popular full frame D700. With it’s DX sensor it has a crop factor of 1.5 which means more bang for you buck when using a telephoto zoom lens. If you purchase the MB-D10 battery pack it will shoot at even higher speeds of 8fps when using continuous shooting and also allows for up to nearly 5,000 pictures to be taken on one charge (when upgraded battery is purchased). With 51 auto-focus and 3-D tracking you are almost guaranteed to have your subject in focus every time you take a picture. The D300s also features Active D Lighting which makes to so your pictures end up properly exposed so you don’t end up with areas of under and over exposure which tend to be common in sports and in shadowy landscape photography

2. Freedom: although all Nikon DSLR’s allow you to manually adjust your settings they are difficult to change until you get to the semi-pro D300 model. If you understand f-stops, DOF, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus points, light metering and other technical jargon and really want to experiment with all of these then a D300s is the camera for you. with shooting modes including: single, cont. low speed, high speed, timer, quiet, and mirror up mode this camera gives you all the freedom you could ever ask for.

3. Learning: this camera will make you learn the true in’s and out’s of photography. With the very accurate light meter it’s not very hard to get the exposure right. No matter what your ISO and f stop is at.

4. User interface. With the dedicated live view and info button new to the D300s over the original D300 it cuts menu times down significantly however it no longer has the memory card hatch release switch. The D300s includes great features such as custom menus, easy to understand menus with the classic (?) button which will explain every camera function in easy to understand terms. On the fly changes include ISO, WB, Quality, shooting modes, a user adjusted fn button, AF/AE lock, light metering, and af adjustments. So the only limitations are your imagination. Selecting your focal point is as easy as looking in the viewfinder and pushing the directional button and watching the selector move around until you have exactly the right spot selected. With two selectors (one for shutter speed and one for f stop) it allows you to never have to take your eye out out of the viewfinder.

The bottom line (why you would choose this over any other Nikon DSLR):
why you’d choose this over the D90: 51point AF w/ 3D tracking, more fps, control of image adjustments, not much more money for a lot more freedom and creativity, contrast auto-focusing during movies, ability to utilize dual card slots (CF and SD), 14bit RAW, Active D Lighting.

Over the D700: full 12MP when using DX lenses rather than 5MP, more fps, $600-$1,000 less, movie mode, smaller pixels for more refinement at low ISO, 100% viewfinder coverage

Over the D3 and D3x: A ton of money, shooting speed, optimization of DX and FX lenses and movie mode, and built in flash, 100% viewfinder coverage which allows for better framing.

This is a great camera HOWEVER NOTE THE FOLLOWING!!!!!

The D700, D3,x,s have FX photo sensors which allow for a much bigger and brighter view finder, it also allows for a wider view (no crop factor instead of 1.5x like the DX) which means if you want more area in your pictures for such things as landscapes then the D700 or the D3 lineup maybe a better option because a 50mm lens in a DX camera looks the same as a 75mm lens on an FX camera.

The D700 and D3 lineup (minus the D3x) utilize the large FX sensor and still only have a 12MP capacity which means that the pixels are larger which allows for better depth of color, better definition in shadows, and better high ISO clarity. The D300 can go to extended ISO of 6400 however the image quality is poor at best when the D3 can shoot ISO 6400 all day long and look great. The D700 also does better at high ISOs than the D300 does because it has the same sensor as the D3 however the D3 still does better than the D700 at extreme ISOs. However also consider the fact that the smaller the image sensor the larger the depth of field so the D700 and the D3 are better for macro or portrait photography and the D300 will give you a larger DOF equivalent to about one f-stop.

THIS IS NOT A VIDEO CAMERA video is pretty good and the utilization of lenses is a great feature however if you want good video spend the money on a video camera. Even a Flip HD does better. The camera produces good video but it doesn’t do well during panning if you plan on putting the camera on a tripod and filming then by all means its fine and with the option for an external mic to give you stereo sound is nice.

When it comes to portability, price, features, weight, usability, image adjustments ect. I personally believe it doesn’t get any better I hope this review helped and I hope you get one too and really enjoy it as much as I have. This camera is the best of all worlds. I say save the money from an FX camera and buy a really nice lens or two or three for that matter. Anyway here is the camera of my dreams and hopefully the camera in your bag shortly I promise you’ll love it, I know I do.

UPDATE: For all you HDR photographers look no further than the D300s you can easily create HDR photos by selecting “multiple exposures” and then setting up multi-step exposures for + or – EV per exposure and after the exposures are done voila you have a beautiful HDR photo. Keep in mind however: you will need a cable release (I recommend the MC-36) for the multiple exposures. OR take a few pictures at different exposures and overlay the photos in the in camera retouch menu and there you have it perfect HDR photos every time! Goodbye Photoshop (for HDR anyway)

The D300s and flash compatibility: I have noticed almost no one has talked about the fantastic flash compatibility with the D300s over many cameras. I figured it needed to be covered so here it goes: The D300s is a DREAM to work with when paired with any Nikon Speedlight Dynamic Lighting System. My favorite and most frequently used flash is the SB-600 Speedlight which can be wirelessly operated for NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE with the D300s, you just have to know what settings to change. Unlike the D3 which has to either have a hot shoe flash controller unit or an SB-800 ($900) the D300s can operate a nearly unlimited number of flashes wirelessly without any accessories. So if you are like so many other Nikon users and own an SB-600 just push and hold the “Zoom” and the “-” button at the same time until you get to custom menu and cycle through until you can adjust the squiggly Z shaped line and turn it to on and it defaults to channel 3 then either push and hold the “zoom” and “-” button to get out of the menu or just push the power button. Then go to the “Custom Setting Menu” (the pencil) on your D300s and change “e3″ “flash cntrl for built-in flash” to the Commander mode and set to channel 3, and pop up your built in flash and there you go…ABSOLUTELY FREE WIRELESS FLASH with perfect exposure compensation every time using a $250 flash unit. Hope it helps someone I know it helped me so have fun and remember to change it back to TTL flash when you’re done.

Today we will look at the variations between some classes of camera bags.

After reading you should have a basic idea of which sort you need and what to look for.

The simplest carriers are the camera sleeves. They are something like an antistatic sock, in which you place your digital camera, but they call it a sleeve, and people feel better about having a sleeve and not a sock. The only thing that saves the sleeve from being a sock is the fact that it is open at both ends. And yes, this means that the sleeve isn’t even a bag at all.

Sleeves afford protection against scratches and keep the digital camera or mp3 player looking new and shiny for a longer time. They are ideal if you plan to carry your camera in a suitcase, or a purse. That is, if you also have a larger camera carrier.

Next segment is addressed to the point and shoot cameras. Just to make things clear, point and shoot refers to compact digital cameras that usually don’t require too much setup before taking a picture. They have a lot of automatic functions and are more user friendly because of that. The camera bags that carry point and shoot compacts are called camera pouches.

The camera pouch is more rigid than the sleeve, and thus there is more protection added. The extra protection comes at the cost of volume and feel, meaning the digital camera pouch is bulkier than a sleeve. The sleeve is THE recommended camera bag for compact digital cameras (without interchangeable lenses).

Holsters. Camera holsters are designed to hold one camera with a few accessories. They will usually have small pockets to keep extra batteries, extra memory and a camera cleaning cloth. Most holsters have a wide shoulder strap, and some models include belt loops.

If they have the right size, holsters bags are very practical. They keep the camera in sight at all times. They are however impractical for sports which require a lot of mobility, like mountain climbing. However, because of thy are small, they are not so cumbersome.

The holsters can fit some of the largest fixed-lens cameras or a non-pro DSLR with a single general purpose lens. This is the most common type of camera bag for ultra-zooms. People who buy DSLR cameras and use them as fixed-lens cameras, can easily manage with a holster.

Most camera bag manufacturers produce holsters. A few also make holsters for DSLR cameras equipped with larger lens. The larger models of Lowepro camera bags also feature all-weather covers to protect against heavy rain. Click here for Lowepro camera bags.

The professional, or DSLR cameras have their own line of bags. They will hold mostly any dSLR camera on the market and a lens or two. The bags have padded walls, more pockets for accessories, and usually a shoulder strap and many times a quick release buckle and zipper.

Finally, for the professional out there, there is the camera backpack. These are the highest quality carriers and can hold a lot of photographic gear, offering great protection.

Digital video cameras continue to grow in popularity as the number of features increases and the cost decreases. FOr an exciting digital video camera, check out vado hd review. There are a number of digital video camera accessories that can make these types of devices much more handy as well as useful. From small “flip” cameras to high-end professional digital video cameras, these technological wonders have become almost indispensable to modern life. Digital video camera accessories may add significantly to your enjoyment of your digital camera.

One particular popular digital camera accessory is a tripod. Regardless of whether they are designed to stand on the floor, or on a table top, tripods ensure that any video captured will be steady instead of jerky, and it makes it handier to shoot longer videos, since the videographer does not have to hold the camera in place for long times. Tripods vary in price from $10 to around $100, so you can find one in about any price range. Take a look at Gorillapod tripods, too. They have flexible arms that can secure your digital camera to most anything.

One of the most useful digital camera accessories is definitely an extra battery. Having a battery run down at a critical part of a video shoot can be quite a hassle, unless of course there are back-up batteries available. You’ll have to buy one to match the precise model of video camera, simply because all of them require different batteries. By giving batteries to the video photographer in your life, you are really giving the gift of time savings. It’s a great accessory to treat your self to as well.

Additional memory cards are also very useful digital camera accessories. A number of video cameras usually takes several kind, but you should examine the model number to be sure. Should you, or the person you are purchasing for do not have a built-in computer card reader, you can purchase card readers that attach to the USB port. These are incredibly useful for transferring video to other people’s computers, where there might or might not be a card reader built in.

For close to $20 you can get a power adapter for the hugely favorite Flip video cameras. These will charge up a flip camera in 2 to 3.5 hours, plus they’re compact and fold up more compactly therefore they will have simply no trouble fitting in a pocket, purse, or camera case.

Another fantastic tiny item is the Nikon 7072 Lens Pen Cleaning System. It’s a pen shaped device which may be used to clean lenses on cameras, telescopes, or binoculars. It has a smooth, retracting brush, plus a non-liquid cleaning compound on a tip made of chamois. It’s ideal for getting fingerprints, dirt, as well as debris off a lens and costs about $10.

Attachable LCD shades are wonderful digital video camera accessories. They are available in sizes to fit 2.5 and 3 inch LCD screens and can be had for below $20. They make capturing video outdoors in vibrant conditions much easier on the eyes by shading the LCD screen to ensure it shows up much better.

Digital video camera accessories tend to be more than fun little add-ons. They could genuinely allow it to be more convenient to use a digital camcorder, and are welcomed by all digital video fanatics.

If you are buying used cameras and second hand camera accessories there are a few things you need to be aware of, and I will try to list and explain how to avoid getting stung by would be fraudsters that lurk in many corners of the internet.

Firstly, use a site that will give you access to a sellers details without having to be a member such as Cam-Trader for all Secondhand Cameras People intent on using fraudulent means to grab your money dont like these kinds of site because they cannot remain anonymous and therefore the risk of being caught by law enforcers is very high. People that are genuine sellers have no qualms about giving contact details. Make sure that to be a member of such sites, that the seller is validated and cannot place items for sale unless they are validated. This is a safety backup if things do go wrong and action needs to be taken against a seller.

Secondly, do NOT part with any money until you are totally satisfied that the seller is genuine, that you have the right answers to questions you asked, and that you are prepared to accept that the item IS as advertised. The typical fraudster will ask for money orders or cash transfers because they are virtually untraceable. Find sellers that have a proper outlet or have paypal accounts that are verified. Its easy to trace
these people if things do go wrong in the transaction and you will have a paper trail leading to the person should you need to take any legal action.

Ok, so now you can trust the seller, but, is the item he/she is selling exactly as advertised? Is it in the condition as stated, is the price a fair one for the item?

Don’t know? … well ask! Genuine sellers have no objection to answering questions about the item they are selling. Not sure if the images provided are of the actual item? Same answer, Ask! Watch out for the “stock photo” ads, they could just be lazy or they could be trying to hide a huge dent in the camera body. Ask for additional pictures if you are not satisfied. Ask if the images are of the actual item being sold.

Once you are happy that the item is as described, look at delivery costs. Some sellers will deliberately keep the item price a little lower and then overcharge for delivery of the item to make it appear a very good bargain. Again, if costs of delivery are not stated, ask before you commit yourself to buy. The ask yourself, could I go to my local outlet and buy this item for less than the total price including delivery?

Bear in mind that no person in business is likely to be giving an item away without making a small profit at least.

When buying Second Hand Cameras or any other Photographic Item, there are a few direct questions you can ask the seller to determine whether it is a good buy or not.

1) Why are you selling it? (if an individual)
2) Are there any scratches on the glass of the lens?
3) Does the camera have a shot counter ?
4) What year was it made?
5) Does it come with a case or bag?
6) Is it refurbished and do you give any guarantees?
7) What are your returns ploicy, terms and conditions?

Of course, when you ask questions you will need to know the technical specifications to ensure that the answers are correct. You can look up camera reviews and read them carefully. Alternatively take some guidance from a friend who knows something about photography and camera equipment.

If you intend spending some of your hard earned cash on Second Hand Cameras it is well worth taking the time to check out what you should be getting for your money. If you have doubts about a seller or the item they are advertising then walk away.

Remember this phrase… Buyer Beware, is the seller being fair?

There will be plenty of other items to choose from so whats the rush? If you believe that the seller is not
as he describes or his item is not described correctly, then look for a “Report this item to Admins” link like the one on Cam-Trader for all Used Camera Equipment

I hope that I haven’t put anybody off buying Second Hand Camera Equipment or any accessories, as this is a growing market where even the most basic amateur can get a lot of enjoyment from taking photographs.

Enjoy your hobby

The photgraphy market has become huge over the last few years and now most people have a camera, or phone camera in their pockets on a daily basis. In fact I dont perdsonally know anyone now who can’t take a snapshot at will, albeit, some are very poor in quality. From the avid amateur to the consumate professional, they all have one thing in common, the need for cameras, camera euipment and camera accessories. That is an expanding market by any stretch of the imagination, somewhat akin to the TV revolution of the 1950’s and on. Everyine has a TV and everyone has a camera.

I will tell you a short story about my step-son called Jim who is an avid amateur photographer. Jim wanted to buy an additional lens for his Nikon D60 camera. So, he set about the internet using search engines and came up with lists of camera shops, traders and shop sites, BUT after 3 days of searching he gave up. He wanted a second hand lens of a specific type as his budget wouldnt alow him to buy new.

Very dissappointed, Jim approached me and asked if it was possible to design a site that would help with this sort of shopping. I could not believe how few sites actualy had adverts directly leading to a seller. Most were directories or lists of oputlets from here to Timbucktoo. I love a challenge and set about designing the site.

Well, to cut a long story short, I designed Cam-Trader.com, a unique site for the introduction of buyers to sellers of Used Camera Equipment

After a couple of months developing a site that was easy to use, cheap to advertise and without any annoying final selling fees. Cam-Trader for Used Photgraphic Equipment was born. At the end of January 2010 We launched Cam0Trader.com and already dealers have started to put items for sale on the site.

Thats the why, now let me tell you about Cam-Trader.com. The site is a dedicated classified ads site for Used Cameras and camera accessories The site is very easy to navigate and you can advertise Used Photgraphic Equipment from only 19p for 30 days. Higher rates apply to longer periods and there are additional features that can be added to make your item for sale stand out in the crowd. Renewal options are availbale, so no need to repeat the ad submission.

I initially thought that this was a good idea for the UK, but I was wrong. We are getting enquiries from all over the world even though the site is new. A person in Australia contacted one of our Dealers and wanted the item shipped out. An Amercian buyer placed a deposit on an item and is collecting it when he comes to the UK later this year. You could have knocked me over with a feather.

So, what about the UK ? Well, after the first week of trading we now have many members who are currently putting items on the site for sale. Dealers and shops love the site, because we gave them a facility to place a URL link directly to their site or item, which gives them free backlinks and helps with their SEO too. Joining is a breeze too. It takes one minute and is TOTALLY FREE. You join even if you dont have anything to sell. Of course you can see the items for sale and buy them, without needing to be a member. To advertise you must register as a member.

And finally, to show our appreciation to the dealers and traders and individuals that join Cam-Trader.com we are giving a promotional code of pb100 which, makes advertising, at least until the end of March 2010 TOTALLY FREE (even with added photos, extended periods, bold, italics, and highlighted features.

Have a look at the site, you have nothing to lose.
